PowerGen Port of Spain Decommissioning Project

Project Update

POWERGEN’S POS PLANT DECOMMISSIONING NEARS COMPLETION
-Phase One reaches 85% completion

In June 2020, the first phase of the PowerGen POS Decommissioning Project commenced. We are pleased to inform our stakeholders that Phase One is now 85% complete.

Phase One included projects for the removal of regulated industrial materials such as mercury, contained in switches; as well as high voltage cable wrap materials. These are now completed.

The remaining 15% of this first phase of the project will see the removal of regulated materials from the combustion exhaust gas ducting of two of the boilers.
Boilers or steam generators are devices designed to create steam by applying heat energy to water. Traditionally, these boilers would have been used to feed steam to the turbines when the plant was in operation.

The 10-member Project Team of specialists from PowerGen provides project oversight and reports regularly to the Environmental Management Authority (EMA). The PowerGen team is supported by skilled, locally sourced, contractors and service providers.

Prior to the execution of Phase Two, PowerGen will host a second Public Consultation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
