The Point Lisas Power Station is located on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in Couva. Construction of the Plant began in 1976 with the establishment of a 132,000 Volt Switch-yard and the installation of the first fully computer controlled Gas Turbine driven Generator unit, rated at 88,000 kilowatts (88MW) which was commissioned in 1977.
In 1978 two 20,000 kilowatt Simple Cycle Gas Turbine-Generator units were added, increasing the total installed capacity of the Power Station to 128 MW and providing “Black Start Capability” which is the ability to start up independently of the power grid.
Between 1980-1982, three additional 88,000 kilowatt (88MW) units and four 62,500 kilowatt (62.5MW) units were installed, bringing the total installed capacity to 642,000 kilowatts (642MW) and making this Power Station the largest in the country.
In 2007, two 105,000 kilowatt (105MW) units were installed. The total installed capacity of this Plant is now 852MW.
